Our student voices

APGS is really good in giving me lots of freedom to be creative in learning and expressing different styles of dance and choreographing in my own style. The school is helping me to find my identity through dance. I am definitely understanding choreography better as I move up in the school. The styles I learn at school I can use in my training outside of school. I’ve enjoyed learning and incorporating contemporary styles with my hip hop. I'm also looking forward to having the freedom and creativity to express myself through my major works in Dance and Visual Arts. The teachers push me and they all really care. It motivates me.

I have been able to find the right balance between my academic study and my practical training at APGS. The school has brought joy into my life. I always look forward to Fridays, having a full day of dance which is so much fun. Being in a small school we get to know students in other year groups which helps support me in both dance and academics. Some of our assessments in academic classes have also been related to performing arts - like creating a dance, artwork or drama piece to show different concepts - which helps us to express our knowledge creatively.

Academically, in year 7 my test skills were really bad and I had trouble studying the right things and I had really low grades in Maths and Science. I’ve learnt a lot about how to study and now my Maths and Science grades are much better. In Dance it used to take me so long to pick up chorey where as now I can pick it up more quickly and find it so much easier. I’ve also improved a lot in my flexibility since year 7.

Since my first day at APGS, everyone has been really nice. Having small classes helps you feel like you fit in with everyone. In our dance classes the teachers are all really nice and it’s good to be able to do classes and learn from the older kids, which helps us get better.
